Diane Sextons account :
My meeting with Steve was very brief (but an unforgettable moment in
my life, nonetheless!) It took a long time for me to get the drawing into
the "right" hands, and there was little time left at that point.
I believe it was the "Head VIP" who finally saw the drawing and immediately invited me and my friend backstage, saying "Stevie is still here, you can meet Stevie."
This was in May of 1987 -- someone had thrown a bottle at the stage and hit
Steve in the head with it, requiring him to have stitches! That's why he
was still there. Anyway, the "Head VIP" took me directly to Steve, and I
just held out my hand and introduced myself like I did this all the time
(ha!) and Steve did the same.
The "Head VIP" showed him the drawing and he
seemed pretty impressed. In that brief meeting, I found Steve to be very
polite and somewhat shy. I remember being surprised to find that he isn't
much bigger than I am (I'm 5'3").
I can't recall exactly what he was wearing, but I believe he had on tight, black leather pants and a black or black and white shirt.
It all felt so surreal -- I could hardly believe I had managed to do this,
especially since I'm a major introvert.
I got very near Billy that night -- he was on his way out
to the van and I ran out and stood as close as they would let me, which was
only a few feet away. I was disappointed that I didn't get to meet Billy,
but getting to meet Steve saved the evening and made it one of life's
cherished moments!
As for the drawing, I last saw it in the hands of the "Head VIP" who
told me he would see that Billy got it. I have no idea if that ever
happened! HOWEVER, dreading parting with it completely, I had a
photographic copy made of it. (which I am enclosing) I worked the drawing
from the picture that's on the back of the 12" version of "Flesh for Fantasy".
Discovering that I could do this (at age 25! - I'm 42 now) gave me a
sense of self-esteem that I was sorely lacking. I found much encouragement
through Billy's music (besides sheer enjoyment!) and I definitely needed a
little of the attitude, too! It changed the direction of my life, and in
some very real ways, saved my life!
